DLC Covid 19 Response: Exploring current issues, continuity of learning, and resilient schools
As the coronavirus has been spreading around the world over the last few months, and shutting down nearly all school buildings in the United States, we have been watching, considering, and developing our response.
Today we go live with the first phase of the resources, studies, and conversations that we expect to have over the next few (or perhaps many) months.
We have developed a first set of web pages that provide our thoughts, and link to a relatively short, curated set of other sites and documents that we feel are among the best available.
Our goal is to complement existing information while duplicating as little as possible. To that end, we are much less focused on providing a wide range of resources for classroom teachers, for example, and instead concentrating more on issues such as how to meet the needs of students with disabilities, and ways to address issues of equity and access for all students.
This week we are also starting two online meetups for DLC members, to discuss the issues they are seeing and addressing. We are likely to open these real-time, online conversations to others by invitation as well in the coming weeks. We are also considering adding new podcasts and webinars as well.
We believe it is likely that current school closures will translate into educators, policymakers, and the general public recognizing that schools must be better prepared to address continuity of learning during future disruptions to instruction. These future disruptions might be in response to a coronavirus rebound in the fall/winter, or due to hurricanes, winter storms, or other disturbances. With this future in mind, we are beginning to build out a concept of resilient schools as a longer-term response.
This blog post is the first of many as we resume a twice-a-week posting schedule. Given the rapidly changing nature of the COVID-19 situation, we are switching from our recent bi-weekly roundup of blog posts to emailing each of these posts to our list. We don’t anticipate more than two emails per week, and you can of course opt-out at any time.
