Alaska has offered a variety of distance learning options to its students for many years. Digital learning activity is limited and occurs largely at the district level. There is no state virtual school and no multi-district online schools.
District activity includes:
The Anchorage School District supports the ASD Virtual Program for grades K-12.
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District has an established eLearning program for K-12 students.
The Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District’s Alaska Digital Academy provides online options for grades 6-12. Before the pandemic, the Digital Academy provided courses and services to districts across Alaska, but now serves only resident district students.
The Alaska Department of Education and Early Childhood provides online courses and training for teachers through the eLearning program but does not provide courses for districts and students.
State Policies
SB 111 (2022) creates a virtual education consortium, managed by Department of Education and Early Development (DEED), to develop and maintain a catalog of virtual education courses for students and teachers. The law gives the consortium the option to charge fees to participating districts, but the specifics have not been defined as of September 2022.
