North Carolina has one of the largest state virtual schools in the country, North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVirtual), There are two multi-district fully online schools. North Carolina Virtual Academy enrolled 3,524 students during the 2021-22 SY and the North Carolina Cyber Academy enrolled 2,871 during the 2021-22 SY. There is also at least one hybrid school, Crossroads Flex High School.

NCVirtual served 34,224 students with 124,540 course enrollments during the 2021-22 SY. Many districts with their own blended learning and 1:1 device programs use NCVirtual to provide supplemental online courses to students. NCVirtual also has a growing Partnership Program where districts use NCVPS courses, technology and training while employing their own district teachers. Districts enter into a partnership agreement by purchasing enrollments in a select number of NCVirtual courses.

IworkNCVirtual is a virtual career exploration series hosted by NCVirtual in partnership with the North Carolina Business Committee for Education. The series features a diverse group of industry leaders from across North Carolina and supports student exploration of career opportunities in North Carolina with a focus on education requirements, getting the job, daily responsibilities, industry environment. IworkNCVirtual has over 70 archived sessions available including presentations by professionals as well as teenage entrepreneurs.

There is considerable district activity, including:

  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools offers online courses through its Virtual High School (grades 9-12) and Virtual Middle School (grades 4-8). The Virtual High School also offers dual enrollment courses in partnership with Central Piedmont Community College.

  • Guilford County Schools offers K-5 students online options through the eLearning Virtual Academy and the eLearning University Prep serves grades 6-8.

  • Granville County Public Schools operates the Granville Academy, a hybrid K-12 school. K-8 students attend onsite two days per week and students in grades 9-12 are provided access a lab for instructional support as needed.

  • BCS Virtual Academy is operated by the Bumcombe County Schools serving students in grades K-12.
